Menopause and intermittent fasting

Embracing the Second Spring: My Journey Through Menopause

At 45 years old, I embarked on a new chapter of my life - perimenopause followed by menopause. This transition has brought about profound changes in my body, mind, and spirit. I choose to see this phase not as an end, but as a "second spring," a period of growth and transformation unique to women.

Through this process, I have discovered a newfound wisdom, a deeper sense of calm, and a heightened awareness of my body. Each day presents a new opportunity to learn and adapt along this remarkable journey.

My yoga practice has been instrumental in navigating this second spring, particularly through the guidance of Petra Coveney and her Menopause Yoga. There have been many trials and errors, as well as moments of triumph and setbacks, but through it all, I have found solace and strength in adapting my practice to meet the needs of my changing body.

I share my experiences not as an expert, but as a fellow traveller on this path. May my reflections serve as a source of inspiration and empowerment for those embarking on their own second spring. Remember, this season of life is a beautiful opportunity for growth, self-discovery, and renewal. Embrace it wholeheartedly and may you find joy and well-being along the way.

So lets dip into it!

Hot Flushes

Two summers ago, I encountered my first hot flush. It felt like my insides were suddenly set ablaze. What started as an occasional discomfort soon escalated into frequent episodes, even haunting my sleep. Waking up drenched in sweat in the dead of night, struggling to breathe, I could sense the erratic rhythm of my heart and breath. Initially, I found it hard to tame these fiery rushes, often spiraling into agitation. Gradually, I mastered the art of soothing myself, making each flush a tad more bearable.

Brain Fog

Following the torment of hot flushes, I was confronted with brain fog, the most challenging ordeal to come to terms with. My inherently chaotic nature coupled with this mental haze stripped me of self-recognition. Lost, frustrated, and disillusioned, I found myself in a pit of self-criticism, veering away from the virtue of AHIMSA (non-violence) I once held dear. It was a phase of utter disarray. However, with unwavering discipline and patience, I crafted techniques to enhance efficiency and realign the fragments of my life.

Mood Swings

Mood swings can be a challenging aspect to navigate, especially when they unexpectedly influence our behaviour and emotional responses. For a seasoned police officer with 15 years of experience, encountering sensitivity and emotional outbreaks can be disconcerting. The story of being moved to tears during a distressing assistance service highlights the profound impact that such mood swings can have, even on those accustomed to handling difficult situations.

Recognising the need to address these unexpected emotional responses is crucial, as seen when the officer sought guidance from a superior to understand and manage these intense feelings. Taking time off from duty to focus on self-improvement and recognising the potential presence of anxiety demonstrate a proactive approach to addressing these mood swings.

Moreover, the acknowledgment that sensitivity and mood swings are a part of the journey underscores the importance of self-awareness and acceptance in navigating such challenges. The incorporation of yoga, pranayama, and meditation as tools to manage and stabilise these emotional fluctuations showcases a commitment to personal growth and well-being.

In embracing techniques to control mood swings and stabilise emotions, individuals like the police officer in this story can cultivate a sense of inner peace and resilience in the face of life's uncertainties. It is through self-exploration and holistic practices that one can gain valuable insights into managing mood swings and fostering emotional balance.

Tiredness

Waking up exhausted every day took a toll on my physical and mental well-being, hindering my ability to engage in my usual workout routine. The lack of energy made it challenging to muster the discipline required for intense physical activities. However, the introduction of Yin yoga into my life at that precise moment proved to be a lifesaver. This slower, more reflective practice provided the perfect remedy for my energy depletion.

Bloating

Experiencing an unexplained increase in belly size and overall bloating caused a disconnect with my body that I had never felt before despite a lifetime of sports and physical activity. Not recognizing myself in the mirror, coupled with heightened sensitivity, created a distressing situation. By making significant changes to my eating habits, I managed to alleviate these symptoms and regain comfort within my own skin. Stay tuned for a detailed post outlining my new diet and the key adjustments that helped me overcome bloating and reclaim confidence in my body.

Heavy Digestions

Seeking professional advice from a PNI specialist like Martina Ferrer and following a non-inflammatory diet can help alleviate bloating and heavy digestions that often accompany menopause. Pairing this with Intermittent fasting can further improve digestion and overall well-being.

Insomnia

Struggling with insomnia can be draining, both physically and mentally. Trying various remedies like diet changes, supplements, yoga, pranayama, and meditation is commendable. However, if these don't bring relief, consulting a doctor for further recommendations, including potential medication, may be necessary to address the issue and improve quality of life.

The relentless headaches that felt like tiny jackhammers in my skull, the unrelenting exhaustion that weighed down my limbs like lead, the gnawing ache in the pit of my stomach that made every meal a battle. These were just a few of the worst symptoms I endured, yet I know there were more lurking in the shadows. Despite the struggles, I remember each one vividly and with a strange sense of gratitude. These battles shaped me into who I am today, and I embrace the phase I find myself in now with a newfound strength and resilience.

Embracing Menopause: Making Major Changes

With my official entry into menopause, I knew it was time to embrace this new chapter in my life. After reflecting on the changes ahead, I made a decision to introduce some positive adjustments to feel better and navigate this transition with grace and confidence. It's a journey of self-care, self-discovery, and a celebration of this new season of life. Here's to welcoming the changes and embracing the beauty of menopause.

Yoga: Adapting my practice to softer sequences and diving into Pranayama and Meditation has been transformative. Studying Ayurveda, hormonal changes, and Mudras has armed me with new tools for this season of life.

  • Diet: Working with a nutritionist led to a complete overhaul—out with gluten, cereals, dairy, sugars, and coffee. Stay tuned for a full blog on this journey!

  • Intermittent Fasting: Embracing 2 meals a day and syncing fasting with my cycle has been a game-changer (thanks, Dr. Mindy Pelz!).

  • Reading and Study: Battling brain fog with daily reading and less screen time has been a work in progress. Cutting back on social media has boosted my focus.

  • Supplements: Supporting my body with vitamins and minerals has become a crucial part of my routine.

  • Listening to My Needs: Tuning into my body and mind has brought a newfound sense of self-awareness. No more pushing myself to do things I'm not keen on!

  • Sharing My Journey: Opening up about my experience has boosted my confidence and eased frustration. Support from loved ones and sharing feelings has made symptoms more manageable. Speak out loud—it helps!

  • Starting HRT (hormonal replacement treatment) has been a game-changer for me. After months of doubts and consultations with various specialists, I finally decided, in collaboration with my gynecologist, to begin HRT. And oh my goodness, if only I had known sooner! To anyone hesitating due to fear or misinformation about hormones, let me make a bold statement: do not fear hormones. They are essential, especially if you're experiencing symptoms at a young age like myself.

Thanks to HRT, under the guidance of my doctor, the transformation has been remarkable. Most of my debilitating symptoms have vanished - I now sleep through the night, the constant fatigue has lifted, hot flushes are a thing of the past, and both the brain fog and mood swings are noticeably improving. This shift has been nothing short of life-changing.

For those seeking reliable information and guidance on menopause and HRT, I highly recommend following Dr. Louise Newson. She is a leading expert in the field, often referred to as the goddess of Menopause, and an exceptional communicator. Trust me, taking that step towards HRT may just be the turning point you've been waiting for.

My life right now is totally different, and I am also a different person. It should be more awareness and information about Menopause. We do not get prepared for it as we do for the menstruation. There is a lot of misinformation and a lack of knowledge and interest in the health industry. I was very lucky because my gynecologist Dr. German Gonzalez Tendero is an incredible professional and an excellent person. He has given me more than he might even realise but having him along my side in this journey has made me realise how much women need support during this second spring of their lives.

Knowledge is power and I have learned the biggest lesson of my life: listen to myself, invest time on myself and respect and embrace every single phase of my life. This blog is dedicated to all those women out there that are suffering in silence the symptoms and changes of this beautiful season of our lives. Stop feeling ashamed of what is going on with you and ask for help. Sharing this process will help you to embrace it and even enjoy it.

Menopause should be normalised and be spoken about.
